Split PDF by text
Accounting systems and mail merges often export hundreds of invoices, payslips or letters as one PDF. Type the phrase that begins each one and SplitPDF cuts the batch apart, naming each file after the line it found.

Good phrases to split on
| Batch | Phrase that starts each document |
|---|---|
| Invoices | Invoice No. / Invoice number |
| Payslips | Employee ID / Pay period |
| Mail-merge letters | Dear |
| Bank or card statements | Statement period / Account number |
| Exam papers or certificates | Candidate name |
Choose a phrase that appears only on the first page of each document. If it also appears in later pages (like "Page 1 of" versus a repeated header), check the list of matched pages before splitting. Letters of equal length are faster with every N pages.
Questions about splitting by text
Can I split a PDF wherever a certain word appears?
Yes. Type the word or phrase, for example "Invoice No." or "Dear", and every page that contains it starts a new file. Pages before the first match are saved as their own file.
Why does it find nothing in my scanned PDF?
Searching needs a text layer. Scans are pictures of pages, so there is no text to search. Use the Scanned stack (AI) mode, or custom ranges, instead.
Can the files be named after the matching text?
Yes. With "Name files after the matching line" on, each file is named after the line where the match was found, such as "Invoice No. 10432".
Is the search case-sensitive?
Not by default. Tick "Match case" to tell "Total" apart from "total". Extra spaces and line breaks between words are ignored.
Is my document text sent anywhere?
No. The text layer is read by pdf.js inside your browser and searched there.
